Razor Burn - Seven Tips On How To Prevent It
Razor burn is caused by hair that is pushed back into the follicle. It can become inflamed and then develop into an ingrown hair.
Use these seven suggestions to minimize the risk of razor burn:
#1 Use a clean, sharp razor each time
#2 Always shave in the direction of the hair growth
#3 Shave after your shower
#4 For some using a shaving oil or gel rather than a cream helps avoid clogging the pores (For others a cream works better - experimentation may be needed)
#5 Avoid passing the razor over the same area numerous times
#6. If razor burn appears, apply an aloe-vera based cortisone cream twice a day to soothe the skin and reduce redness.
#7. Use Ingrown Hair Treatment to treat or prevent ingrown hairs when shaving and eliminate razor burn.
The Main Causes Of Hair Loss In Women
When you think of hair loss it's natural to assume that it's a condition that predominantly affects men. Some experts however suggest that as many as one in four women will experience hair loss at some time in their lives. So why don't we see and hear more about it? Perhaps the answer has something to do with one or more of the following:
- Women are better at disguising hair loss.
- Women's hair loss is generally less extensive in terms of severity.
- Women's hair loss tends to be spread evenly over the head rather than concentrated in one or two spots.
So why do women lose hair - are the causes very different to those that result in male baldness? There are probably three common reasons for hair loss in women:
1. Female pattern baldness - believe it or not, most women affected by hair loss lose it for the same reasons as men. They suffer from androgenetic alopecia which is a reaction to male hormones in the body, specifically the conversion of testosterone into the hair-unfriendly DHT. In the case of women, pattern baldness may start later and the effects may be less extreme due to the influence of female hormones, but the condition is nonetheless the same as that found in male pattern baldness.
2. Telogen effluvium - this is regarded as the second most common cause of women's hair loss and this is unsurprising given the nature of the condition. Telogen effluvium is characterized by a general thinning of the hair and is usually brought about as a result of some traumatic event causing sufficient stress to interfere with the normal hair growth cycle. Given that pregnancy is a prime example of the type of event that can shock the hair growth cycle then perhaps the high incidence of telogen effluvium amongst women is only to be expected.
3. Alopecia areata - this is the third most common hair loss condition to affect women. It is characterized by patchy areas of hair loss on the head or it can be more widespread over the body. It is thought to be caused by deficiencies in the immune system but much is still not known about the condition. In many cases the hair regrows spontaneously after a variable period of time, but in a minority of cases the problem may be more severe and longstanding.
If you experience any form of hair loss arrange to visit your physician to discuss the treatments that may be suitable for your particular condition.
Can You Drink Your Way To Good Health?
Many years ago I became convinced of the need to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Although I tried to eat healthy meals, mixing salads, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains as wisely as I could, numerous studies pointed out the need to add nutritional supplements to my diet.
Major Study
The major study that caught my attention most strongly was the 1977-1978 USDA National Food Consumption Survey (Crocetti and Guthrie, 1982). This study surveyed the 3 -day dietary records of over 21,500 individuals. Among other findings the study showed that not one person consumed 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance for the top ten nutrients.
That was a rather shocking finding. Not one single person! I prided myself in eating well, but I decided that it would be a good idea to supplement my meals with additional vitamins and minerals.
Taking Tablets
I started out by taking a single multivitamin daily. Then, over the years I added additional tablets of antioxidants, namely vitamin C and vitamin E. In more recent years I added calcium tablets and B vitamin tablets to my routine. As you can guess, the result was that I was taking 5 tablets of supplements twice a day.
Does that sound familiar to you? That’s a lot of tablets to swallow. Taking that many tablets each day was never pleasant for me. Many times I wished that there was an easier way to take the supplements that I felt I needed.
Liquid Supplements
Then a friend introduced me to a nutritional supplement that I could drink. Now that made sense. A good, potent liquid nutritional was certainly much easier and much tastier than a handful of tablets.
The convenience and good taste of the liquid was enough to convince me to abandon the tablet delivery system. But I learned further that the liquid form of the vitamins and minerals was more apt to be easily absorbed by my body than were the old tablets.
Absorption
Unfortunately tablets do not always digest fully in the stomach. Sometimes they only digest partially as they pass through the digestive system which allows only part of their potency to be absorbed by the cells. In fact, the Physician’s Desk Reference, a highly respected reference book, once reported that the absorbency of vitamin tablets can be as low as 10%. What that means is that very little of the available nutrients are actually utilized by the body and its cells.
By contrast, vitamins and minerals in a liquid form can be absorbed by the body’s cells at a much higher rate. As high as 95%. The liquid is more easily digested and absorbed by the digestive system than tablets are. Further, the absorbency of the liquid vitamins starts at the tongue and beneath the tongue. This sublingual delivery helps to get the nutritional benefit to the cells much faster.
How does this work? Take nitroglycerin for example. Nitroglycerin is effective for combating anginal chest pains associated with heart disease. An effective way to deliver the nitroglycerin is to place it beneath the tongue at the first sign of chest pain. This sublingual delivery gets the nitroglycerin into the bloodstream and to the chest pain much faster than it would if it had to be swallowed, digested, and absorbed into the bloodstream through the digestive system.
Similarly, vitamins and minerals will absorb into the bloodstream and to the cells much faster in liquid or spray form. For example, vitamin B-12 is an important vitamin, but as we get older we lose the stomach secretions necessary to digest and absorb the vitamin through the normal digestive process. The solution to the problem is to deliver vitamin B-12 in either a spray or a sublingual form. That way the potency of the vitamin is delivered quickly to the cells and the digestive system is bypassed.
Ayurveda Can Help Stop Hair Loss
Most hair loss sufferers seek solutions from Western medicine or turn to remedies derived from local traditions. Some experts however argue that the ayurvedic system of medicine has much to offer in dealing with hair loss conditions.
Ayurveda is the traditional system of medicine practiced in India and Sri Lanka. It is a complete approach to health care designed to promote a way of life rather than an occasional treatment. As a holistic system of medicine ayurveda focuses on our uniqueness and takes into account our mental attitude, lifestyle and spirit which should not be treated in isolation from each other.
According to ayurveda, the following principles are beneficial to healthy and plentiful hair:
- The scalp must be kept cool, so protection from sun and washing in cold or lukewarm water are paramount.
- Sound nutrition is key, so a hair-friendly diet should emphasize proteins, iron, zinc, sulfur, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-Complex and essential fatty acids.
- Use should be made of hair analysis to ascertain toxicity levels and nutritional deficiencies.
- Oils, for example sesame and coconut, should be applied to the scalp to nourish, lubricate and strengthen the roots. This will also improve circulation to the head.
